If you're...
12 years old or under
If you’re 12 years old or under, we'll need to see an ID for yourself as well as your parent or guardian. We can use your parent or guardian's proof of address.
Your parent or guardian will also be required to provide documentation that confirms your relationship. This could be:
- An original birth certificate
- A court order
- A letter from Oranga Tamariki.
Between 13 - 17 years old
If you’re between 13 - 17 years old, you'll need to bring your ID and proof of address to get verified in branch.
If you only have a New Zealand birth certificate, we can accept that as your ID. If you don’t have proof of address, we can also accept your parent or guardian’s.
If you're aged between 16 and 17 years old and you don’t have a proof of address, we can also accept your parent or guardian’s as long as your last names are the same. If your last names are different, you'll need to bring documentation to your nearest Kiwibank or Local for Kiwibank that confirms your relationship such as:
- Your original birth certificate.
- A court order.
- A letter from Oranga Tamariki.
A business or trust
If you're part of a trust or you're starting a business, a non-profit organisation, looking at new opportunities, or you’re after detailed advice, we’ve got the right people in the right places to help you with your business ambitions. We've pulled together a handy break down of what you'll need to open a business account.
Overseas tax information
Before setting up a new account, you'll also be required to provide information on your overseas tax residency status including your tax identification number if applicable.**
Foreign tax residents
If you’re a tax resident in any country other than New Zealand, we’ll require your tax identification number.
US citizens or US tax residents
If you’re a US citizen or US tax resident we’ll need to ask you a few questions to comply with the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).
*This process is called Customer Due Diligence and is required under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009. We need to check your ID and proof of address in order to verify your full name, date of birth and address.
**This information is required under the Tax Administration Act 1994. As a New Zealand financial institution, Kiwibank must identify accounts held by customers who are foreign tax residents or entities connected to foreign tax residents, and must report prescribed identity and financial information about these accounts to Inland Revenue annually.
If you can’t provide acceptable forms of ID and proof of address, please visit your nearest Kiwibank or contact us and we may able to work through an exemption process.
