On 20 June 2023, the Government announced a competition study into personal banking services in New Zealand, to be carried out by the Commerce Commission. The Commerce Commission has until 20 August 2024 to report back to the Government.
On 21 September 2023, the Commerce Commission published public submissions to the Commerce Commission’s preliminary issues paper. Kiwibank produced a submission of its own and a joint submission with the following domestic banks: The Co-Operative Bank, SBS Bank, and TSB Bank.
Kiwibank is supportive of the Commission’s work on this study as it's aligned to Kiwibank’s own purpose of Kiwi Making Kiwi Better Off. A key aspect of this purpose is ensuring that all Kiwi in Aotearoa have simple and easy access to the right personal banking services for them. A truly competitive market will work to ensure that outcome for all New Zealanders.
You can download Kiwibank’s full submission and our joint submission with the domestic banks.
